01In a few linesEditorial

One Sentence

Somewhere past the last fence postand the last argument about what is practical, the archer draws the string to his ear,not because he sees the target, but because he has finally understoodthat the pull is the point, that the arrow is a letter sent aheadto a place he will reach later on foot, and that the whole long road, the dust, the borrowed bread, the strangers who answered his questionswith better questions, was the answer all along.

02What this house stands forAttributed

Dhanus is a fire sign in the dual quality, ruled by Jupiter (Guru). The fire here is steady and broad, closer to a hearth than a spark. The tradition reads the sign as the place where the individual meets a larger purpose: philosophy, law, teaching, pilgrimage and the pursuit of truth.

Jupiter’s role as teacher shapes the sign. Dhanus is linked to higher learning, to long travel and to the search for a worldview. Its dual quality means it faces two ways: the archer looks at a distant target and also at the string beneath his fingers.

The body correspondence is the thighs and hips, the parts that carry a traveller. Classical authors also note that Dhanus is the sign of the horse-bodied centaur, which brings together animal energy and the human will to aim.

These are traditional associations, gathered from the classical texts and summarised. Jyotisha schools describe each house at much greater length, and they do not always agree.

03The name and the symbolAttributed

Dhanus means bow. The figure is an archer, often shown as a centaur in Western art and as a human warrior drawing a bow in Indian art. The bow is also the weapon of Rāma, and the sign’s link to dharma comes from the idea of the aimed arrow: a life with a direction.

04Element, quality and rulerAttributed

Element
Fire. Fire is energy, will and enthusiasm. In the tradition it is the element of action and inspiration.
Quality
Dual (dvisvabhāva). Dual signs close a season and prepare the next. They adapt and connect.
Gender
Masculine (odd). A classification of direction of movement, not of people.
Direction
East
Body
The thighs and hips (Kālapuruṣa), a mnemonic for the order of the signs.
Dignities
No classical exaltation falls in Dhanus. Jupiter rules the sign and holds moolatrikona from 0° to 10°. Some schools place Ketu’s exaltation here.

Jupiter rules Dhanus and Mīna. In Dhanus its role is that of the public teacher or guide: ethics, belief, generosity and a wish to share what it knows. A strong Jupiter is read as wisdom and good counsel. A troubled Jupiter is read as dogmatism, excess or advice given without being asked.

05Strengths and challengesAttributed

Often described as strengths

  • Optimism and a wide view
  • Honesty and a love of learning
  • Generosity and teaching ability
  • A sense of purpose that carries through difficulty

Often described as challenges

  • Preaching or tactlessness
  • Overpromising and overreaching
  • Restlessness with routine
  • Assuming that one’s own truth is universal

Every sign carries both lists. They record what the tradition associates with the sign, not what any person with this sign is like. The Moon, the rising sign, every planet and every house in a chart change the picture, and so does a life.

06The nakshatras inside DhanusCalculated

A sign holds nine padas, which is two and a quarter nakshatras. These are the lunar mansions that fall inside Dhanus, with their traditional lords, deities, symbols and stars. A nakshatra can be shared between two signs, which is why some are listed with only some of their padas.

Sagittarius (The Archer): 25 catalogue stars. The lines are a convention for tracing the pattern, not an official outline.

Sagittarius contains the direction to the centre of our galaxy, and it is one of the richest fields in the sky for binoculars. Its brightest stars form a shape called the Teapot, with the spout pointing toward Scorpius. Kaus Australis, at magnitude 1.8, is the brightest. Above the lid of the Teapot, the Milky Way is at its thickest. The sidereal sign Dhanus contains Mūla, Pūrvāṣāḍhā and the first pada of Uttarāṣāḍhā. The Mūla stars themselves lie in the sting of Scorpius.

08Stories behind the signAttributed

The Greek centaur is sometimes named as Chiron, the wise teacher of heroes, which fits Jupiter’s teaching role. In India the nakshatra Mūla means “the root” and is ruled by Nirṛti, the goddess of dissolution. The tradition places the sign’s first moments close to an uprooting, and says the archer’s aim begins from there.

09The Sun, the Moon and this signCalculated

In the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the Sun is in Dhanus about 16 December to 14 January. The dates move by a day or so from year to year, and shift by a few days under a different ayanamsa. If you were born in that window, your Sun is in Dhanus.

In Jyotisha the sign most people mean by “my rāśi” is the sign the Moon was in, which changes every two and a half days. It can only be found from a birth date, a birth time and a birth place. Try the conversion tool to see where the Sun stood on a given day.

10A small storyEditorial

The Long Way

Faisal had a ticket to the end of the line and no reason to be there. This was, he felt, the best kind of ticket.

The bus took nineteen hours. By the third he had learned the name of the driver’s daughter, the best way to cure a hiccup (a spoon of sugar), and both sides of an argument about whether the river they were crossing was holy or merely wet. By the ninth he had stopped checking his phone. By the fourteenth, the old woman beside him, who had said nothing since morning, offered him half a boiled egg and a question.

“Where are you going?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Good,” she said, with total approval. “Then you’ll notice things.”

At dawn the bus climbed out of a valley and the whole country lay below them in blue folds, field after field turning silver, and he understood that a map is only a drawing by people who got there first. He took out his notebook and wrote, for the first time that year, a sentence he did not intend to cross out.

At the last stop he stood at the edge of a road that went on, and felt not lost but aimed.

Invented. No real person is described, and the story is not a portrait of anyone born under this sign.

11Questions to sit withEditorial

These are prompts and not predictions. You can use them whether or not you take astrology seriously.

  • What do I believe so firmly that I have stopped examining it?
  • Where is my vision ahead of my preparation?
  • Who has been my best teacher, and have I thanked them?

12The sign and the constellationCalculated

The Rāśi is a thirty-degree division of the zodiac belt, counted against the fixed stars. The constellation Sagittarius is a star pattern whose size and edges are irregular. They share a name and a region of sky, but not an exact boundary.

See the constellations page for all twelve charts, how long the Sun spends in front of each, and why the two are not the same thing.
