01In a few linesEditorial

Afternoon

All morning the bull has not moved, and the morning has not minded.Clover. A fly. The long shoulder of a hill.

He knows the weight of what he owns:the shade, the slow river, the name of every stone in the wall.

Ask him to hurry and he will look at youthe way the hills look at weather. What is it you think is comingthat is better than this?

02What this house stands forAttributed

If Meṣa is the spark, Vṛṣabha is what the spark is meant to build. It is an earth sign in the fixed quality, which Jyotisha reads as steady, resistant to change, and attached to what has been made. The ruler is Venus (Śukra), so the steadiness is not austere. It is the steadiness of a good meal, a well-made garment, a voice that has been trained.

This sign is where the Moon feels most at ease. The tradition treats the Moon as most at home in Vṛṣabha because the Moon governs nourishment and comfort, and the bull’s patient, grazing life embodies both. Lunar themes of sleep, appetite, memory and mood are therefore described in gentler terms here than in most signs.

The body correspondence is the face and throat, which links the sign to voice and taste. Classical authors associate it with song, speech, food and the pleasures of the senses. It is also the sign most often cited for patience, since the bull does not move until it is ready.

These are traditional associations, gathered from the classical texts and summarised. Jyotisha schools describe each house at much greater length, and they do not always agree.

03The name and the symbolAttributed

Vṛṣabha means bull, the male of cattle and a symbol of strength and fertility in Vedic ritual. The bull is also the vehicle of Śiva (Nandi). Babylonian astronomers saw the same stars as the Bull of Heaven, and the Greek myth of Zeus taking the shape of a bull to carry off Europa gave the Western constellation its story.

04Element, quality and rulerAttributed

Element
Earth. Earth is matter, work and the practical. In the tradition it is the element of the body, resources and results.
Quality
Fixed (sthira). Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season. They hold, sustain and resist change.
Gender
Feminine (even). A classification of direction of movement, not of people.
Direction
South
Body
The face, throat and neck (Kālapuruṣa), a mnemonic for the order of the signs.
Dignities
The Moon is exalted here, strongest at 3°, and holds moolatrikona from 4° to 30°. Venus rules the sign. Some schools also place Rahu’s exaltation in Vṛṣabha; others place it in Mithuna.

Venus rules Vṛṣabha and Tulā. In Vṛṣabha its role is closer to the material side: wealth, comfort, craft, beauty that can be held. In Tulā it concerns relationship and proportion. A well-placed Venus is read as taste, affection and ease with money. A troubled Venus is read as indulgence or possessiveness.

05Strengths and challengesAttributed

Often described as strengths

  • Patience and reliability
  • A trained sense of beauty and quality
  • Loyalty in affection
  • The ability to see long projects through

Often described as challenges

  • Stubbornness once a view is set
  • Attachment to comfort over growth
  • Possessiveness about things and people
  • Slowness to forgive

Every sign carries both lists. They record what the tradition associates with the sign, not what any person with this sign is like. The Moon, the rising sign, every planet and every house in a chart change the picture, and so does a life.

06The nakshatras inside VṛṣabhaCalculated

A sign holds nine padas, which is two and a quarter nakshatras. These are the lunar mansions that fall inside Vṛṣabha, with their traditional lords, deities, symbols and stars. A nakshatra can be shared between two signs, which is why some are listed with only some of their padas.

  • KṛttikāA flame is a kind of knife.
It takes away what was never the thing.
  • RohiṇīThe cart creaks home with the whole harvest.
Even the Moon stops here to look.
  • MṛgaśīrāA deer lifts its head at nothing you can hear.

Taurus (The Bull): 12 catalogue stars. The lines are a convention for tracing the pattern, not an official outline.

Taurus is one of the richest regions of sky. The orange star Aldebaran (Rohiṇī) marks the bull’s eye and is one of the twenty brightest stars in the night sky. Beside the V-shaped Hyades cluster sits the Pleiades, the famous small cluster the tradition calls Kṛttikā. Orion’s belt points straight at Aldebaran, which makes the bull one of the easiest figures to locate in winter. In the sidereal zodiac, Vṛṣabha holds the later stars of Kṛttikā, all of Rohiṇī, and the first half of Mṛgaśīrā.

08Stories behind the signAttributed

In Indian tradition the Pleiades are the six Kṛttikās who nursed the war god Kārttikeya. In Greek tradition they are the seven sisters pursued by Orion. Many cultures noticed that the cluster rises before dawn near the start of the farming year, which is why it shows up in sowing calendars from the Pacific to the Mediterranean.

09The Sun, the Moon and this signCalculated

In the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the Sun is in Vṛṣabha about 15 May to 14 June. The dates move by a day or so from year to year, and shift by a few days under a different ayanamsa. If you were born in that window, your Sun is in Vṛṣabha.

In Jyotisha the sign most people mean by “my rāśi” is the sign the Moon was in, which changes every two and a half days. It can only be found from a birth date, a birth time and a birth place. Try the conversion tool to see where the Sun stood on a given day.

10A small storyEditorial

The Table

The table had come with the house and would leave with the house, said the agent, but Meera had already decided otherwise. It was oak, scarred, too big for the room. A previous family had measured their children on one leg, in pencil.

She spent the winter at it. Not working. Eating. She learned that bread tastes different at a table that has fed forty years of people, that soup stays warmer in a bowl you have chosen, that a Tuesday becomes an occasion with one candle and a refusal to hurry.

Her sister visited in March and watched her cut a pear into eight equal pieces, an act of such slow tenderness that she finally said, “You’ve changed.”

“Have I?”

“You used to eat standing up.”

Meera passed her a slice. Outside, rain began on the new leaves, softly, as if it also had nowhere to be.

In April the agent phoned about an offer from the developers. She listened, thanked him, and said no, kindly, the way you decline something generous that you simply do not need.

Then she went back to the pear. There was a lot of afternoon left, and she meant to use all of it.

Invented. No real person is described, and the story is not a portrait of anyone born under this sign.

11Questions to sit withEditorial

These are prompts and not predictions. You can use them whether or not you take astrology seriously.

  • What have I kept simply because it is familiar?
  • Which of my habits give me real rest, and which only dull the day?
  • What would I build slowly if I knew it would last?

12The sign and the constellationCalculated

The Rāśi is a thirty-degree division of the zodiac belt, counted against the fixed stars. The constellation Taurus is a star pattern whose size and edges are irregular. They share a name and a region of sky, but not an exact boundary.

See the constellations page for all twelve charts, how long the Sun spends in front of each, and why the two are not the same thing.
