Marriagematching
Guna Milan compares two Moons in eight ways and scores the pair out of 36, then Mangal dosha is checked on its own. Every score is shown with the table behind it, and where the published tables disagree the page says so.
02How it worksCalculated
Ashtakoota means eight parts. Each one compares something about the Moon of one person with the Moon of the other: the Moon sign for Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, the Moon’s nakshatra for Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi. The eight carry 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 points, 36 in all. Each score comes from a fixed table, so the same two Moons always give the same answer.
The classical tables were written for a bride and a groom, and some are not symmetrical, so swapping the two can change the total. If you leave the roles unspecified, the page shows both orders. Mangal dosha is checked separately, because it depends on where Mars stands in each whole chart and not only on the Moon.
Everything is worked out in your browser. A birth time is not needed for the eight kootas, but without one the Moon can fall in two signs or stars in the same day, and then every possibility is scored and the spread is shown. The rising sign, which needs a birth time, is used only for Mangal dosha.
03Where the tables come fromAttributed
The animals of the Yoni koota and its seven hostile pairs are from Muhurta Chintamani. The friendships of the planets that rule the Moon signs are from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The Yoni and Gana point tables are those of the Saravali reference, which are free to reuse under a share-alike licence. The rest follow the form printed in most almanacs.
Almanacs print slightly different tables, and this is normal. Varna can put the earth and air signs in either order, Vashya has at least three versions, Graha Maitri is scored in two ways for a friend with an enemy, and the middle values of the Yoni table are the least settled. For those the page also works out the other edition and shows the range.
The exceptions listed for Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, and the cancellations of Mangal dosha, are the ones most often cited. Schools accept different ones, and no list here is a complete rulebook.
04What this cannot tell youEditorial
The score compares two Moons. It does not know how two people talk, what they value, whether they are ready, or anything else about them. Nobody should end or begin a marriage because of a number on a page, and a low score is never a reason to pay for a remedy.
